Why heavyweight blanks sell — and what GSM actually means
The first thing a customer does with a garment is feel it, and the first thing they feel is weight. Over the last five years the whole premium end of streetwear moved from 150 gsm to 270 gsm tees and from 280 to 500 gsm fleece, and the brands that moved first are the ones still trading. Here is what GSM measures, why weight sells, and what it costs.

What GSM is, and what it is not
Grams per square metre — the weight of the fabric, not the garment. A 270 gsm tee uses fabric that weighs 270 grams for every square metre; a typical promotional tee is 140–160. It is the single number that predicts more about how a garment feels than any other.
It is not a quality grade on its own. A 270 gsm fabric can be a beautiful compact ring-spun jersey or a coarse, loosely knit cotton that happens to be heavy. Weight is the starting point; the yarn, the spin and the knit finish the sentence. But among comparable constructions, heavier is denser, more opaque, holds its shape longer and drapes with more presence.
What each weight is for
| GSM | Fabric | Feel | Use | Our blank |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 140–160 | Light single jersey | Thin, drapes, shows through | Promotional, events, undershirts | Tank Top 180 |
| 180–200 | Standard jersey | Everyday, soft, fitted | Retail basics, uniforms, first prints | Classic T-Shirt 200 |
| 240–270 | Heavyweight jersey | Dense, structured, boxy | Streetwear, premium merch, pump covers | Heavyweight T-Shirt 270 |
| 300+ | Ultra-heavy jersey | Stiff, sculptural | Statement pieces, limited drops | custom |
| 280–350 | Light fleece / French terry | Soft, breathable | Summer sweats, joggers | Fleece Shorts 350 |
| 400–450 | Mid fleece | Warm, standard hoodie | Everyday hoodies, uniforms | Cropped Hoodie 420 |
| 500–550 | Heavyweight fleece | Thick, boxy, premium | Streetwear hoodies, drops | Classic Hoodie 500, Crewneck 550 |
Why heavy sells
It feels expensive before anyone reads the label. A 270 gsm tee in the hand has a density that a 160 gsm tee cannot fake, and customers convert that density into a price expectation within seconds. Brands that switched to heavyweight blanks report the same thing: they raised prices and sold more.
It photographs. Heavy fabric holds a shape on a hanger, on a body and on a flat lay. The boxy silhouette that defines current streetwear only works because the fabric has enough body to stand away from the wearer. A light tee collapses into the frame.
It lasts. Denser fabric pills less, holds colour longer, keeps its neckline and survives more washes. The garment that is still worn in year three is the one that gets the brand recommended.
It hides less. Heavyweight is unforgiving of poor construction — a twisted seam or a wavy hem shows on a stiff fabric where it would disappear on a drapey one. Which is why it also signals that the factory knew what it was doing.
What weight costs
Fabric is about 45% of a blank's cost, so weight moves the price but does not dominate it. From our current rate sheet at 50 pieces: Classic T-Shirt 200 at $10.75, Heavyweight T-Shirt 270 at $12.91 — about $2 for 35% more fabric. Classic Hoodie 500 at $30.89 against a typical 400 gsm hoodie in the high twenties. The customer pays the difference back in the first second of touching it.
The calculator scales price by GSM for every blank in our range. Move the slider from 200 to 270 on a tee and watch the price rise by roughly a fifth while the perceived value roughly doubles.
Where heavy is wrong
Sport. A 270 gsm cotton tee in a gym is a wet towel. Performance wear wants 150–180 gsm polyester, and the pump cover — the heavyweight oversized tee worn to and from the gym — is the exception that proves it.
Heat. In a Lahore or Dubai summer a heavyweight tee is a commitment. Brands selling into hot markets run 200 gsm for summer and 270 for the rest of the year.
Events and promotions, where the garment is worn twice and the budget is per head. Weight is wasted on a tee nobody keeps.
Prints that need to breathe. A large plastisol print on a 300 gsm tee is a board. Heavy fabric wants embroidery, small prints, discharge or water-based ink.
Heavyweight, made in Lahore
We knit and source heavyweight jersey and fleece specifically for the boxy, oversized silhouettes that sell — compact ring-spun cotton at 270 gsm, brushed-back fleece at 500 — and cut them to patterns developed for weight, with dropped shoulders and wider bodies. Garment dyeing on request for the washed heavyweight finish.
Minimum 50 pieces; our heavyweight blanks are the most-ordered items in the range for brands in the UK, US and Australia. Available blank with your label, or decorated.
Common questions
- What GSM is a heavyweight t-shirt?
- 240 gsm and above; 270 is the current premium standard. Below 200 is standard weight; below 160 is promotional.
- What GSM should a hoodie be?
- 400–450 for everyday; 500 and above for a premium streetwear hoodie. Our Classic Hoodie is 500 gsm.
- Is heavier always better?
- No — for sport, heat and one-wear events, lighter is right. Heavy is for garments meant to be kept and worn for years.
- How much more does a heavyweight tee cost?
- About $2 per piece at 50 — Classic T-Shirt 200 at $10.75 versus Heavyweight 270 at $12.91 from our current rate sheet.
- Does heavyweight fabric shrink more?
- No — compact-knit heavyweight cotton shrinks about as much as any cotton, usually 3 to 5% on the first wash, and our patterns allow for it. Garment-dyed heavyweight is cut oversize to allow for the dye shrinkage, so the finished size is as quoted.
- Can I print on heavyweight cotton?
- Yes — it takes embroidery, screen print, DTF and DTG well. Keep plastisol prints modest in size; discharge and water-based inks suit the heavy hand best.
- Which weight do most brands order?
- 270 gsm tees and 500 gsm hoodies, by a wide margin, for brands in the UK, US and Australia. 200 gsm tees for uniforms, events and hot-climate summer lines.
- Can you make a tee heavier than 270?
- Yes — 300 and 320 gsm jersey on request from 50 pieces. Above 300 the tee becomes a statement piece rather than a basic.
